The Hobbyist I have a history of hobbies becoming careers. When I was sixteen I got a job at the grocery store where my family had shopped since before me. So that was never really a hobby or a career. My hobby at the time was playing music. Then I became a full-time professional musician, and during those years, my hobby was playing poker. Then I became a full-time professional poker player, and during those years, my hobby has been writing. I pointed this pattern out to my wife Kay, noting that in the last two years, I'd been doing less and less poker playing, and more and more writing, and if this keeps up, I could very well become a full-time writer, and if that happens, we should be very careful in choosing my next hobby, since it will in all likelihood become my next career after writing. Kay said, "I think you should do music again. I wasn't there the first time." © tommy angelo 2006 |
